THE HISTORY OF DUNNES STORES

DUNNES Stores opened its first store on Patrick Street in Cork in 1944 - and it was an instant hit.

Shoppers from all over the city rushed to the store to snap up quality clothing at pre-war prices in Ireland’s first ‘shopping frenzy’.

During the excitement, a window was forced in and the police had to be called to help control the crowds hoping to bag founder Ben Dunne’s ‘Better Value’ bargains.

Dunnes later opened more stores in the 1950s and began to sell groceries in 1960 – starting with apples and oranges.

The retailer said: “Fruit was expensive at the time and Ben Dunne yet again offered Better Value than anyone else in town.

“Over time, our food selection has grown and that spirit of good value has remained strong.

“Now we offer a wide range of carefully-sourced foods from both local Irish suppliers and overseas.”

The retailer’s first Dublin store opened its doors in 1957 on Henry Street and a super store on South Great Georges Street was unveiled in 1960.

They added: “In 1971, our first Northern Irish store opened, and many others soon followed.

“Expansion continued in the 1980s in Spain, and later into Scotland and England.”

Dunnes now has 142 stores and employs 15,000 people.

They’re perfect for keeping heat into your home during winter[/caption]

A radiator reflector is a tool designed to improve the efficiency of a radiator by reflecting heat back into the home rather than allowing it to escape through the wall.

They’re made of materials like aluminium or foil, and placed behind radiators to direct the heat into the room.

This can help reduce your heating costs and improve comfort by ensuring that more warmth is distributed throughout the room its in.

It reads on Aldi’s website: “Help to keep your home warmer in the winter with the SuperFOIL Radiator Reflector.

“Easy to install and can be cut to fit your radiator, it features an internal bubble structure for additional thermal performance.”

The product is from the hugely popular brand SuperFOIL and it comes in dimensions of approximately 0.6 x 3 metres.

It comes with bubble foil construction and built in adhesive strips which secures them in place against the wall.

What’s more, it cuts heat loss of up to 86 per cent and they’re cut to size to use behind any radiator.

The item is set to sell out quick, so shoppers must act fast.

This comes after Aldi Ireland has released lots of new winter staples including radiators for only €39.99 to help “conquer the cold snap”.

An oil-filled radiator is a type of heating device that uses oil as a heat reservoir.

The oil inside the radiator is heated by an electric element, and the heat is then radiated into the room.

These radiators are known for their ability to retain heat for a longer period of time even after they are turned off, making them perfect for homes during winter.

‘Perfect for cosy winter nights’

It reads on their website: “Get Set This Winter with Our Cost-Effective Oil Filled Radiator.

“It heats up quickly and stays warm long after the power is switched off. Perfect for cosy winter nights.”

The bargain buy has three heat settings and an adjustable thermostat – allowing buyers to choose what temperature they like.

It also has overheat protection and built in safety tip switches in place.

What’s more, it comes with easy moving wheels allowing you to transport it around the home.

The oil-filled radiator is available in stores nationwide on January 12.

THE HISTORY OF ALDI

The German discount supermarket chain came to Ireland in 1999.

Aldi’s first few shops opened in November 1999, with locations in Sandyford, Dublin, and Ballincollig, Cork.

By the mid-2000s, Aldi bosses had opened numerous stores, focusing on providing high-quality products at low prices.

As the recession hit 2008-2012, Aldi’s popularity grew as consumers became more price-conscious.

The supermarket giant continued it’s expansion in Ireland between 2013-2018, while refurbishing existing stores.

By 2018, Aldi had over 130 shops throughout the country.

The chain began to focus on expanding its range of Irish-made products and supporting local producers.

In 2023, Aldi had over 140 stores in Ireland.

The store invested in sustainability initiatives, such as reducing plastic packaging and increasing the availability of organic and eco-friendly products.

Aldi chiefs said: “At Aldi we are committed to supporting Irish suppliers. Developed in partnership with Bord Bia, Grow with Aldi is designed to help the very best Irish suppliers develop their brand.

“To date, we’ve invested €10 million in our Grow with Aldi development programme in a bid to find the very best Irish suppliers.

“As a result, for a limited time only there are over 47 new products, from 27 Irish suppliers available in store.”

Aldi have introduced technological advancements with self-checkout systems and contactless payment options.

Shock clip shows ‘treacherous’ conditions at popular Irish beauty spot as stranded drivers blasted for ‘pure stupidity’

PEOPLE have been blasted for “pure stupidity” after being left stranded in the snow at a popular beauty spot that was hit hard by the ferocious cold blast this week.

Wicklow County Council urged people to stay away from the Wicklow Mountains this week after inches of snow fell and freezing temperatures caused “treacherous” conditions in the area and left roads impassable.

The Sally Gap has been closed off to the public after cars full of people keen to take in the snowy scenery were left stuck in the snow or abandoned on the narrow roads.

Dublin-Wicklow Mountain Rescue Team urged people to stay well away from the area after spending the week responding to “a number of incidents” in the area – including “stranded vehicles on impassable roads”.

The DWMRT confirmed that over the past 48 hours alone, they have had four callouts to assist with stranded vehicles in the Sally Gap and Wicklow Gap area.

And sharing a video, above, of conditions in the area, they said: “Here’s a short dash-cam view of just how treacherous the conditions are.

“Our message for the coming days is simple: Stay local, stay warm and stay safe.”

The area received heavy snow over the past few days – and there’s no sign of conditions improving anytime soon after temperatures plunged as low as -8C in some areas last night.

And Gardai also joined in the call for people to completely avoid the Wicklow Mountains as concerns grew over lingering snow, ice, frost and freezing fog.

A Garda spokesperson confirmed that they issued fines to 15 drivers who parked their cars on narrow roads around the Sally Gap.

They said: “We understand that people want to take in the snowy scenery but please help us out and be responsible. The area is impassable so please avoid, thank you.”

Wicklow County Council also urged people to stay away from the “impassable” area and confirmed that roads on higher surfaces were being cleared but elevated areas still poss the risk of “persistently treacherous” road conditions.

They warned: “All road users are urged to exercise extreme caution when travelling in elevated areas due to persistently treacherous road conditions.

“Even after weather warnings are lifted or downgraded, many roads may remain hazardous for days due to a dangerous combination of rain, sleet, snow, ice, and extremely low temperatures.

“Please avoid any unnecessary journeys to ensure your safety and the safety of others.”

‘SNOW TOURISTS’

Council bosses also warned that cars parked on the narrow roads at Sally Gap prevents gritters and other road-clearing machinery from doing their job effectively.

People on social media blasted those that had made the journey up the mountain unnecessarily, with some saying the drivers showed “no consideration” for locals in the area and another claiming they were “snow tourists”.

One said: “Inconsiderate in the extreme. No thought for the services who risk themselves to help those in genuine need. Hit where it hurts – in the pocket.”

Another added: “Some people are unbelievable and very silly.”

A third simply said: “Pure stupidity.”

Over the years, the daily podcast has proved to be a huge hit with fans.

Over the years, it has been presented by a whole host of stars and former Islanders.

For the summer series of Love Island, last year’s All Stars contestant Chris Taylor hosted it alongside Indiyah Polack.

However, The Sun can exclusively reveal that because the former Islander is now busy taking part in Dancing On Ice, he is unable to do the show this year.

Instead India will be joined by popular 2019 Islander Amy Hart, who’s ex-boyfriend Curtis Pritchard is actually appearing on All Stars.

A source told us: “Chris is gutted he’s not hosting it this year but he’ll be way too busy with Dancing On Ice.

“Amy Hart and Indiyah Polack are taking the reigns and Chris hopes he’ll jump on as a guest at some point.”

Before Chris hosted the show, I’m A Celeb winner Sam Thompson hosted the show.

However, following his jungle win in 2023, the reality star has become too busy to do the podcast anymore.

Meanwhile, with launch night just days away, there is already a HUGE twist waiting for the legendary Islanders.

So far 12 stars have been unveiled are heading into the villa.

All of the Islanders, who have appeared across series two to 11 of the ITV2 dating hit, were once able to step forward for who they fancied and choose their pairs themselves.

But The Sun revealed that for Love Island All Stars, the fans have now got the chance to decide who will be matched with who on Day One.

Voting opened at 7.30am this morning, and fans cast their vote on ITV’s Love Island app.

A viewer vote was also used to pick the first set of couples for All Stars season one.

This saw fans put ex-couple Liberty Poole and Jake Cornish together.

In fact, this didn’t go down well at all with Jake, who left shortly after the show started.

The Sun also revealed how the All Stars South African villa will see its living room filled with beds.

Fans think this is a sign that the series could be the biggest one yet, with more bombshells arriving than ever.

Love Island All Stars kicks off on ITV2 on Monday, January 13 at 9pm.

Love Island All Stars 2025 official line-up

Love Island All Stars is returning to TV for season 2.

Here we take you through the line-up of Islanders’ who are set to go into the villa so far.

Bombshell rumours
