I want to be normal but my health condition makes me eat compulsively
DEAR DEIDRE: ALL I want is to be normal, but I have a health condition that makes me eat compulsively and people judge me.
Doctors told my parents I wouldn’t live long, but I’m still going strong. How can I come to terms with my problems and have a good life?
I’m a 33-year-old woman with Prader-Willi Syndrome, the rare genetic condition that affects about 2000 people in the UK.
I was diagnosed as a child. It makes me constantly hungry and desperate to find food, as well as causing learning problems and weak muscles.
I’m overweight, even though I try hard to control it. People treat me like I’m greedy and lazy, but I’m not.
I still live with my parents and don’t have a job. It’s hard to make friends and I’m sick of having to explain myself to everyone.
Life is so hard. I just want to be like everyone else.
DEIDRE SAYS: Living with a rare condition is very difficult, but you’re not alone.
Contact the Prader-Willi Association (pwsa.co.uk, tel: 01332 365 676) where you can talk to someone who understands.
They’ll call you back to save you the cost of a call. They’ll advise you and can help put you in touch with other young people with your condition.
They organise events all around the UK, as well as online.
Things have got a lot better for people with Prader-Willi. According to the NHS, adults with Prader-Willi, who control their weight can now expect to live longer and healthier lives.

My hairy back makes me so self-conscious that I now avoid meeting women
DEAR DEIDRE: HAVING a hairy back and shoulders is making me feel so self-conscious that I now avoid meeting women.
I feel more like a gorilla than a man. Is there any medication I could take to get rid of it?
I’m a 35-year-old man and started growing back hair in my late 20s.
As I have fair skin and black hair, it’s really noticeable.
But it’s impossible to shave off myself.
Chest hair is one thing, but people always joke about hairy backs, making it clear they’re seen as unattractive.
And good-looking men invariably have hairless chests and backs.
After being teased mercilessly by some mates, I no longer want to take my shirt off. I’ve stopped going swimming or to the gym.
As for dating, I feel too shy to get undressed in front of a woman in case she is repulsed.
So I’ve given up on that too.
Can the doctor help me? It’s spoiling my life.
MORE FROM DEAR DEIDRE
DEIDRE SAYS: Having a hairy back and shoulders is very common in some ethnicities, and runs in families.
Unless you have extreme hair growth all over your body – a very rare condition called Hypertrichosis – there’s nothing you can do medically.
Try not to let it get you down. Lots of women actually like hirsute men, and see it as a very masculine trait.
But if you can’t embrace your hair, there are various hair removal treatments available, from waxing to lasers – although they can be costly and painful.
See my support pack, Unwanted Hair for more.
