Nearly 14,000 Americans Have Been Infected With New Respiratory Virus HMPV, CDC Reports

COVID-19 levels are surging. Human bird flu cases are also on the rise. And now, the human metapneumovirus, or HMPV for short, is infecting thousands of Americans around the country. The highly contagious virus, which belongs to the same group as respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), measles, and mumps, can cause congestion and breathing problems similar to the common cold, according to Cleveland Clinic.

The National Respiratory and Enteric Virus Surveillance System (NREVSS), commissioned by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), has reported an alarming spike in positive HMPV cases since Thanksgiving. As of Dec. 28, nearly 14,000 Americans have been infected with HMPV.

However, infectious disease physician Amesh Adalja says people are blowing the illness’ severity out of proportion. "There’s just this tendency post-COVID to treat every infectious-disease anything as an emergency when it’s not," Adalja said in an interview with The Washington Post. "You wouldn’t probably be calling me in 2018 about this."

Be that as it may, health officials urge the public, especially seniors, those with children, and the immunocompromised, to stay vigilant. Keep reading for everything you need to know about HMPV, including common symptoms and forms of treatment.

RELATED: COVID Levels are "Very High" and "High" in These 28 States After Holiday Surge.

How does HMPV spread?

The virus is highly contagious and can spread in one of two ways: through direct contact (like kissing) or from touching contaminated objects (like door handles). Additional examples include shaking hands, hugging, sharing food/drinks, coughing, sneezing, sharing kid toys, and touching infected surfaces, according to Cleveland Clinic.

Common HMPV symptoms to look out for.

It can be hard to differentiate HMPV from the common cold, as their symptoms are nearly identical. However, untreated and/or more advanced cases of HMPV can result in upper respiratory infections and make lower respiratory infections like pneumonia and asthma worse, says Cleveland Clinic. In most people, HMPV will cause the following symptoms:

  • Coughing
  • Fever
  • Runny or stuffy nose
  • Sore throat
  • Wheezing
  • Shortness of breath
  • Skin rash

If you already had HMPV as a child and are otherwise healthy, your symptoms likely won’t be as harsh this time around. Conversely, adults 65 and older and those who are immunocompromised (especially those with breathing difficulties) might have a harder time getting over the illness.

How do you get tested for HMPV?

You can’t self-test for HMPV at home, but a quick nose or throat swab at the doctor’s can determine whether you have the virus. Your sample will be sent to a lab, where experts will test for various viruses. In some cases, a chest X-ray may also be taken.

How do you treat HMPV?

Since there is no vaccine or antibiotics for HMPV, rest and hydration are key. According to Cleveland Clinic, mild HMPV cases typically resolve on their own within a week, though lingering symptoms are normal. Adults can also take over-the-counter medications, like pain relievers and cough suppressants, to help alleviate symptoms.

After a couple of days, if your symptoms aren’t getting better or have worsened, speak with a healthcare provider for additional treatment options.

Nordstrom Is Closing More Stores Despite $6B Deal to Go Private

Nordstrom is entering a new era. The luxury department store announced major plans to go private following an approved $6 billion agreement with El Puerto de Liverpool, which has been an investor in the company since 2022. Once the ink is dry, the Nordstrom family will own 50.1 percent of the company, giving it the upper hand in decision-making changes—including those affecting Nordstrom Rack. First order of business? Shutting down multiple store locations by next month. Keep reading to see if your neighborhood Nordstrom and Nordstrom Rack will be impacted.

In Massachusetts, both the Northshore Mall, located in Peabody, and South Shore Plaza, located in Braintree, will cut ties with Nordstrom in 2025. The Nordstrom located within the Northshore Mall will cease operations on Jan. 31, while the South Shore Plaza location will close indefinitely on March 9, reports WBZ-TV.

“Decisions like this are never easy and we understand the impact they have on our team members,” a Nordstrom spokesperson told the news outlet. "We're committed to taking care of our employees through this transition, which includes supporting those that are interested in finding another role within Nordstrom."

Dick’s Sporting Goods will be taking over both retail locations following their lease expiration.

The Nordstrom Rack at Empire Outlets in the St. George neighborhood of Staten Island, New York, didn’t live to see the new year. The storefront closed on Dec. 4, 2024, two years after the mall filed for foreclosure. Nordstrom confirmed the news in an email to SILive.com, citing the space’s lease expiration.

The company also said it doesn’t have plans to close any additional Nordstrom or Nordstrom Rack locations in the New York City area.

“Our other Nordstrom and Nordstrom Rack stores in the area will remain open. This includes our flagship New York City store, our men’s store, two Manhattan Rack locations, and two Manhattan locals. Customers can continue to take advantage of our suite of services at any of these locations,” reads the statement.

In Dec. 2024, the company announced it would be shuttering a Philadelphia Nordstrom Rack store due to “lack of growth.” The 43,000-square-foot retail space is located at 1785 Franklin Mills Cir., within the Philadelphia Mills Mall.

"We've been fortunate to be a part of this community for over nine years, so the decision to close was an extremely difficult one for us," said Laurie Black, executive vice president and president, Nordstrom Rack in a press release. "We are grateful to our employees for their hard work and for the loyalty of our customers. Unfortunately, sales growth has not met our expectations over the past few years and we have chosen to close this location."

PlayStation bids to bring smell-o-vision to life backfires as gamers say Sony ‘will lose money’

GAMING companies are often adding new features to their consoles in the hope of bringing more immersive experiences to gamers.

A number of hardware pieces have been released over the years in the name of immersion, and most notably, many companies believe that VR is the future of gaming.

But fans are saying that they don’t want to smell Kratos[/caption]

However, VR doesn’t have a large install base like home and handheld consoles do, but there is still a large push for the medium.

PlayStation has revealed its next step in immersive gaming at tech event CES, but gamers seem divided on whether that’s something they actually want.

Sony’s Future Immersive Entertainment Concept was showcased during the event, with a piece of tech that covered a whole room.

The room featured Sony screens covering every wall, with a person playing The Last of Us at the centre.

Alongside Sony’s current technology, such as haptic feedback and dynamic audio, the kit also pumped smells into the room.

The trailer for the new technology explains: “This Future Immersive Entertainment Concept aims to explore these possibilities [for narrative immersion].

“This proof-of-concept project combines the latest location-based technologies, Sony Crystal LED panels, engaging audio, haptics, scent and atmospherics to fully immerse you into the world of the story.”

However, gamers are split in whether they are interested in the technology, particularly given the choice of game Sony showcased.

The Last of Us is set in a dystopian world where humans are struggling to survive against people infected with a deadly fungus.

One Twitter user writes: “My room smelling like sweat and gunpowder while I play Call of Duty.”

Another said, “I can’t think of a single game that will enhance my experience by smelling it.”

A gamer on Reddit was more straight to the point, saying: “Nobody wants this.

“Can we get actually good VR first before this weird niche that’ll lose Sony money.”

Theme park reveals plans for new land based on world’s most popular kids TV show and it’s the first in Europe

A NEW theme park land based on the world’s most popular kids TV show is set to open in France.

A first for Europe, Parc Spirou Provence has revealed plans for a Naruto attraction.

The series, originally a manga (Japanese comic book) was created by Masahi Kishimoto in 1999, before becoming a cartoon in 2002.

The Japanese anime show was found to be the most watched kids show in 83 countries, following a study by The ToyZone.

And the 15,000m² attraction will be an immersive experience based on the anime’s village of Konoha.

Working with Japanese designers, attractions and characters will be part of the land although more is to be revealed.

It hopes to open by 2026.

It will be the first Naruto theme park land in Europe, with the others all in Japan.

The theme park manager Hervé Lux said, “It is a great joy and an honor for us to bring the Naruto universe to life at Parc Spirou.

“We have been working on this incredible expansion for 4 years now.

“Led hand in hand between the Park, Mediatoon Licensing, and our Japanese partners Shueisha, Studio Pierrot, and TV Tokyo, this project will allow us to offer visitors the most immersive experience possible for a theme park.”

Parc Spirou Provence first opened in 2018, with three rollercoasters and themed lands.

Based on the French-Belgian comic book Spirou & Fantasio, other themed attractions at the park also include The Smurfs.

Hoping to welcome 450,000 guests next year, earlier this summer it took over the nearby Wave Island waterpark.

And Naruto is not the only Japanese anime coming to major theme parks.

Universal Hollywood confirmed that experiences based on other popular shows such as One Piece and Jujutsu Kaisen will launch from April to May this year.

Similar Naruto attractions are already open in Japan (pictured)

Or you can visit Nördlingen in Germany – a town thought to have inspired the manga Attack on Titans.

But if you find yourself in Japan, you can go to the world’s largest anime theme park, Nijigen no Mori.

The park has everything from Naruto and Godzilla to smaller pop ups like Spy X Family.

Another theme park is opening in Europe, this time in Poland, with mermaid and viking themed lands at Hossoland.

In the mean time, we’ve founded up the best theme parks and attractions opening in the UK and Europe this year.

And here are five UK theme parks you’ve probably never heard of.

She said: “One of my best buys In the January sale, and it wasn’t even on sale. I was hoping it would go on sale.

“It actually sounds a bit mean of me, because this fabulous fur coat is in Dunnes Stores, and it was only €60.”

The classic coat is perfect for your capsule wardrobe.

Carrie continued: “Like a coat like this on sale would be €60, like you’d give €120 for this. I would anyway.

“It’s a timeless piece, fair play to Dunnes. I think they’re very fair and reasonable with their clothes.

“Lads these days, clothes are cheaper than food. That’s my excuse, anyway.

“But I’m going to be good this year. I’m really going to be more mindful and more conscious. But I am pleased with this.”

The cosy coat is available in sizes 8 to 18.

Its description reads: “Achieve ultimate comfort with this longline coat from Gallery.

The belted hot water bottle, retailing at €10, has a soft grey cover and Velcro strap.

An Irish TikTok user, who posts under @megankatemcg, told how the hot water bottle is a game-changer.

She said: “This one is for the girls, potentially the guys as well. But I feel like definitely more girls.

“If you want to get yourself like a little treat, like a little sweet treat, a little something cosy for this freezing weather, or just in general, to make your life 10 times happier – you need this, this bad boy strap on hot water bottle.”

THE HISTORY OF DUNNES STORES

DUNNES Stores opened its first store on Patrick Street in Cork in 1944 - and it was an instant hit.

Shoppers from all over the city rushed to the store to snap up quality clothing at pre-war prices in Ireland’s first ‘shopping frenzy’.

During the excitement, a window was forced in and the police had to be called to help control the crowds hoping to bag founder Ben Dunne’s ‘Better Value’ bargains.

Dunnes later opened more stores in the 1950s and began to sell groceries in 1960 – starting with apples and oranges.

The retailer said: “Fruit was expensive at the time and Ben Dunne yet again offered Better Value than anyone else in town.

“Over time, our food selection has grown and that spirit of good value has remained strong.

“Now we offer a wide range of carefully-sourced foods from both local Irish suppliers and overseas.”

The retailer’s first Dublin store opened its doors in 1957 on Henry Street and a super store on South Great Georges Street was unveiled in 1960.

They added: “In 1971, our first Northern Irish store opened, and many others soon followed.

“Expansion continued in the 1980s in Spain, and later into Scotland and England.”

Dunnes now has 142 stores and employs 15,000 people.
