Kerry legend and ex-Footballer of the Year lands surprising new manager role with leading Meath club

PAUL GALVIN is the new manager of Ratoath.

The Meath club have appointed the Kerry legend as boss for 2025, with ex-Donegal underage star Nathan Gavigan continuing as coach.

Galvin was coaching Dublin giants Kilmacud Crokes in 2024 under new Meath gaffer Robbie Brennan.

He also served as a Kildare coach under Glenn Ryan in 2022.

The four-time All-Ireland winner was appointed Wexford manager in 2019 but never took charge of a Championship match.

He quit in September 2020 due to work and travel commitments — the All-Ireland SFC did not begin until November that year due to Covid-19.

Gavigan coached Ratoath last year under Lar Norton as they exited the Meath SFC in the quarter-finals.

The club won their first senior county football title in 2019 and added two more in 2020 and 2022.

Meanwhile Derek McGrath is to stick with Doon for 2025.

The Waterford man led the club to their first-ever Limerick SHC title last year and will stay at the helm when they defend their crown this season.

McGrath bossed his native county for five campaigns until 2018, with his Déise side losing the 2017 All-Ireland final to Galway.

The De la Salle man has been linked to several inter-county vacancies since his departure.

He had coaching stints with the Laois and Dublin Under-20 sides before his Doon appointment for the 2024 campaign.

Finally in Gaelic football news, Saturday’s game between Dr Crokes and Errigal Ciarán has been switched to St Conleth’s Park.

The first of the All-Ireland Club SFC semis was due to take place at Portlaoise’s O’Moore Park.

But following a pitch inspection yesterday, GAA chiefs decided that Newbridge will host the meeting at 3pm.

Both last-four fixtures were originally fixed for last Sunday, only to fall victim to freezing weather.

Leinster kingpins Cuala and Connacht champs Coolera-Strandhill also meet on Saturday in Breffni Park at 5pm.
